The use of material as the focal point for the database that unifies a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system is described. Material identification, detailed definition, and monitoring throughout the entire shipbuilding process provides the critical inputs to each stage of the process, including marketing, planning/design, scheduling, execution (manufacturing/purchasing/assembly) and evaluation. The necessary components of this CIM coordinating software are described.
