UK STUDIES TRIMARAN HULL FOR FUTURE ASW FRIGATE

The UK Ministry of Defence is exploring the potential of an unconventional trimaran hull-form as a design option for the Royal Navy's next generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigate. Proponents argue that the trimaran form offers better powering at high speeds; improved seakeeping; a more flexible internal and upper deck layout; potential acoustic, infra-red and radar signature reduction advantages; increase protection against missile and torpedo attack; and considerable savings in both acquisition and life- cycle costs.
