MINE CLEARANCE RISK EVALUATION USING THE VERSATILE EXERCISE MINE SYSTEM

This paper describes the Versatile Exercise Mine System (VEMS) which was originally developed in the early 1980's for the Royal Navy, is widely used by the US Navy and which has recently been the subject of a major update. The VEM, with its multiple influence sensors, can be programmed to emulate the fire control logic of any known or anticipated ground or moored influence mine. The integral recording and data transmission system enables all mine responses to be identified together with the corresponding range of the platform, thereby permitting an assessment of damage risk and the development of low risk countermeasures techniques.
