THE PERFORMANCE OF MODERN HULL MOUNTED MINE HUNTING SONAR

This paper first summarises the demonstrated performance and features of the DSQS-11 M hull mounted minehunting sonar. Results are presented of a study of the difference in performance between the VLF extended modern Hull Mounted Sonar (HMS) and a typical Variable Depth Sonar (VDS) approach to mine hunting. The probability of encounter of different mine types is discussed and their performance in typical scenarios is compared. A new mine hunting sonar system configuration is proposed which combines the best characteristics of both HMS and VDS system types. The paper concludes that such a configuration is feasible and affordable.
