SMALLER AMPHIBIOUS HOVERCRAFT IN THE MCM ROLE

Now that smaller amphibious hovercraft have a proven military function it is timely to reassess their suitability for the mine countermeasures role. Their advantages; ultra shallow draft, resistance to underwater explosion and low signatures, have been known for many years but high cost and relatively low capacity have discouraged their use. This paper describes two separate engineering developments of the last decade which, when combined, have made possible a revolutionary new approach to mine countermeasures.
