ON CHARACTERISTICS OF STABILITY EQUATION FOR A RING-STIFFENED CYLINDRICAL SHELL

The author explains that the characteristics of instability for an orthotropic shell under uniform external pressure are: the number of circumferential waves N being always greater than 2 and the value of m 1 being of the same order with 1. The applicable range of the formula used for calculating the critical pressure of instability of this kind of shell is discussed with illustrated examples. It is pointed out that the result obtained would be erroneous if the formula was used beyond this range. This paper has also proved the conditions of the number of longitudinal semi-waves m=1 when a ring-stiffened cylindrical shell loses stability, demonstrating that the m value of the ring-stiffened cylindrical shell is equal to 1.
