COUPLED BENDING AND TORSIONAL VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF CONTAINER SHIPS

Based on thin walled structural mechanics, this paper presents a FEM model of a thin walled beam which is appropriate for the coupled bending and torsional vibrational analysis of container ships. This model takes effects of warping, shearing and rotation of cross- sections into account, and also the structural discontinuity due to large deck openings and anti-torsional boxes (deck strips). The numerical results by the thin-walled beam FEM analysis are in good agreement with the experimental results and the calculated results by 3-D FEM analysis. It is shown that the effect of anti-torsion boxes on the torsional stiffness of container ships is significant.
