THE EFFECT OF INTERFERENCE OF FOUR EQUISPACED CYLINDERS IN CROSS FLOW ON PRESSURE AND FORCE COEFFICIENTS

The static pressure distributions on four cylinders arranged in a square configuration subject to cross flow are presented for spacing ratios ranging from 1.26 to 5.80 and angles of incidence of the oncoming flow ranging from 0 to 45o in 150 intervals. The corresponding forces, lift and drag, on each cylinder are also given by integration from the measured pressure distributions. The results are compared with flow visualizations and with other measurements. A critical spacing ratio which was different from the situation of two and three cylinders, was found to be L/D=2.7 at small stagger angles. The effects of the angle of incidence on the force and base pressure coefficients is also discussed.
