ON THE ESTIMATION OF ENCOUNTER DIRECTIONAL WAVE SPECTRA OF A RUNNING SHIP

A new method to estimated the directional wave spectra from the motions of a running ship has been developed. The method is based on the Parametric Method assuming the linearity between incident waves and motions of a running ship. The accuracy of the method is investigated by numerical simulations and is shown to resolve different directional seas consistently from the motions of a running ship, particularly in following seas. The method is also used to analyze experimental data obtained from a free-running test of a VLCC model and is shown to be a powerful tool for directional wave estimation from the motion of a running ship.
