BAYESIAN ESTIMATION OF DIRECTIONAL WAVE SPECTRA BASED ON SHIP MOTIONS (2ND REPORT)

Based on Bayesian modelling procedure, a stochastic procedure is introduced. Using the procedure, directional wave spectra can be estimated using the ship motion data recorded during a voyage. The prior distribution in this procedure consists of two parts; one is the stochastic constraint so called Gaussian smoothness prior distribution, and the other is adopted to avoid excessive estimation for the directional wave spectra. The encounter frequencies are transformed into the true wave frequencies even in following seas. To examine the reliability of the proposed procedure, onboard tests were carried out. The possibilities of this procedure and problems encountered in its application are discussed.
