THE ESTONIA DISASTER: AN INSPIRATION FOR DESIGNING THE SAFE COMBINED PASSENGER-RORO FERRY OF THE MONOHULL TYPE

The author discusses the design of safe ro/ro ferries. By arranging more watertight bulkheads than is common, it is possible to design and build vessels which will not capsize due to free water surfaces on the car deck, caused by damage to the outer shell, the bow door or the stern door. The proposed arrangement of the bulkheads if described.
