A new loading/unloading system has been designed to radically speed up cargo handling in ports. The system is based on cargo- carrying platforms hovering above the ground on air cushions. The platforms, loaded in advance with up to four twenty-foot containers each, are coupled together like a train and pushed or pulled across the terminal area, up a loading ramp and onto the cargo deck of a specially equipped roro vessel. A truck or loco is used to move the platforms and also provide the compressed air for the air cushions.
