AIDING THE CONTROL OF EMERGENCIES ON SHIPS

This paper describes the development of a prototype, computer based, multi-media information retrieval and presentation system. The system, named 'Shipmasters Emergency Aid', is intended to assist the successful control of emergencies onboard ships by providing appropriate information when it is required. The 'Aid' incorporates the specialised knowledge of experienced shipmasters and ease of use is of prime concern. The case for the use of a training system based upon the 'Aid' to train personnel in the control of emergencies is presented. It is foreseen that the 'Aid' will have widespread use in emergency control in the future.
