Research has been conducted and papers published by B. Barenyi as early as 1925 on the principles of impact- absorbing steering systems. The data collected and the design criteria recommended have more or less been ignored by the automotive industry to this very day. Steering columns are - with a very few exceptions - still a deadly missile in head-on collisions. The steering system is and has been the most dangerous equipment in cars. It is a fact which is often pointed out by a rather small group of responsible people. The grave consequences of such inaptly designed steering systems is brought to the attention of the attention of the socalled "safety experts", the legislative bodies and the insurance companies which do not seem to be unduly impressed by this fact. In any case the endeavours made continue to be ignored or neglected. No information is published on fatal injuries caused by so-called "sporting" steering wheels and so-called "safety" steering columns which penetrate far into the car in cases of headon collisions. At best the automotive industry is willing to accept two of the stipulated minimum of six design features for steering columns and wheels. From a perusal of pertinent literature is becomes obvious that steering wheels and columns account for an untold number of fatal - and avoidable - accidents. All the people killed by these steering columns could still be alive if the warnings would have been heeded. /HSRI/
