UNPAVED ROADS AS SOURCES FOR FUGITIVE DUST

Airborne dust from unpaved roads causes discomfort, increased respiratory ailments and driving hazards. An attempt is made here to gather and present preliminary data on the amount, distribution and mineralogy of dustfall near several unpaved roads. A brief description is given of unpaved roads. The method of dust collection and analysis is detailed, and the findings are presented. Containers nearest the road collected the most dust. A semilogarithmic plot is used to illustrate dust distribution. Atmospheric versus road dust is calculated and the composition of each is shown. A discussion of soil-aggregate roads is included.
