RISK AND SAFETY ON THE ROADS: THE OLDER PEDESTRIAN

This report describes a study of the problems faced by the older pedestrian and ways in which such problems could be alleviated. There were 4 phases: (a) interviews to establish a picture of pedestrian activity among older people; (b) experimental measurement of older peoples' judgement of speed and distances; (c) the observation of older pedestrians crossing the road at sites identified as presenting difficulties; and (d) the formulation of recommendations based on an analysis of (a) to (c). A detailed account is given of the methods used in the study which took place in several districts of Newcastle- upon-Tyne. Recommendations are put forward in the areas of drivers' responsibilities, educational materials and publicity and specific improvements.
