DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROFOIL CATAMARANS IN NORWAY

The design of 2 hydrofoil catamarans began in Norway in 1988. This paper describes the design and development of the vessels which have fully submerged foils. The advantages of using catamaran hulls and the principles behind the automatic flight control system are explained. Propulsive performance, seakeeping, operability and safety of the prototypes is discussed. Results from trials are presented and plans for the next generation are discussed.
