THE EVOLUTION OF TUG DESIGN: THE CANADIAN EXPERIENCE
Two major research studies on behalf of the Canadian Ministry of Transport on the subject of the tug and barge industry in Canada have produced a wealth of data. This paper focuses on the subject of tug design, as represented by the historical development of tugs in Canada. The relationships between factors of tug dimensions, power, and performance are presented and the role played by regulation in influencing tug design is discussed.
