ON THE FAR FIELD CONDITION OF THE SECOND ORDER VELOCITY POTENTIAL FOR WAVE DIFFRACTION PROBLEMS

The asymptotic velocity potentials of the second order diffraction waves at infinities under the action of bichromatic incident waves are obtained analytically. Because the inhomogeneous free surface condition for the second order velocity potential which includes the first order potential only, is nonlinear, there are nonlinear interaction terms in the second order velocity potential between the first order monochromatic waves. These interaction terms at the infinity in the down-wave direction represent the outgoing waves, but some of the interaction terms at the infinity in the up-water direction represent ingoing waves. Therefore, the Orlsnski condition is not generally valid for the nonlinear diffraction problems.
