APPLICATION OF WELDING ROBOT SYSTEMS TO SHIP HULL ASSEMBLY
Robotic automation has increasingly been used in shipbuilding, and NC arc welding robots have been developed by some shipyards. The article describes a welding robot system developed in Japan, consisting of three main systems for automatic material transfer control, welding positioning, and automatic welding instruction for the robot. Eight welding robots were employed for the block assembly process in a trial operation in 1991. Following a year of evaluation tests, the robots have been used successfully in hull structure assembly.
