STUDY OF CONTROL MODELS FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL WITH AID OF VARIABLE DIRECTION SIGNS

The purpose of the study was the development of a control model for use in a motorway network. The Rhine-Main district was selected as the test area. The findings of other projects are discussed. Accompanying measures for the introduction of traffic control by means of variable traffic signs are suggested. On the basis of an analysis of the network structure, potential weak spots on the open road and in the vicinity of intersections are defined, and the permissible volumes for particular degrees of traffic quality are indicated. Travel-time measurements by means of the method of characteristics and cross section surveys by way of random checks are used to analyse the traffic structure. With an evaluation of existing counting posts for permanent traffic counts, the proportion of through-traffic which could be influenced by control measures is established. The control model includes a network description, a macroscopic deterministic traffic flow model, and a target function related to short-term forecast. The target function contains the sum of the travel times and a coeffieicnt of accident probability, which is derived from vehicle accumulation. In the details, a greater number of alternatives is given. A simulation programme was prepared for testing the models and assessing alternatives.
