RECENT RESEARCH AT DET NORSKE VERITAS CONCERNING FAST CRAFT

The paper gives an outline of some recent and ongoing research at DNV concerned with structural aspects of fast vessels. Topics covered include slamming loads on hull structures, response of these structures to such loads, and related materials aspects. The activities range from drop testing of model hulls into water through laboratory testing and computer simulations to measurements on an experimental vessel. Studies of accelerations and extent of damage due to collisions of fast vessels are outlined, as is work on local impact resistance. Research leading to improved methods and tools for calculating motions and structural loadings for fast vessels are also described.
