AFTER PIPER ALPHA, THE INSURANCE ASPECTS

This paper reviews a number of major offshore casualties in order to place the Piper Alpha loss into perspective. Available insurance coverages are outlined and estimates for the various categories of loss arising out of Piper Alpha are provided as are detaals of the majority of fatal offshore accidents during the last 20 years. The effect of the Piper Alpha loss on worldwide insurance and reinsurance markets is considered, with an explanation of methods of reinsurance. Details of major onshore energy losses in recent years are provided and the paper concludes with the author's observations on the likely effect of Piper Alpha on offshore insurance arrangements in the future.
