THE MEASUREMENT AND PREDICTION OF RESIDUAL AND RESTRAINT STRESSES IN SUBMARINE STRUCTURES

Welding, by virtue of contraction, induces stresses at welded joints in submarine structures. These stresses can either be local or long range. This paper presents methods for measuring and predicting these two types of stress. Experimental techniques using measurement of strain and theoretical methods using thermal and structural computer models are described.
