MODIFICATIONS OF THE INDIANA SKID TESTING SYSTEM: 1968 TO 1976

The major modifications of Indiana's towed trailer skid system are described to provide information for those responsible for designing and specifying this type of equipment. These modifications were made over a seven year period after delivery in 1968 through the 1975 testing season. The change in the method of recording the raw data from the strip chart recorder to magnetic tape was probably the most significant and is covered in detail. The evolution of the data reduction system is included to illustrate the extent of modifications in this area. The use of a microprocessor provides on-board data reduction to give a final skid number immediately after a skid test is conducted. A step-by-step sequence of operation shows the overall testing procedure. An additional skid testing systems is currently being fabricated and is scheduled for delivery by summer. This will include the latest advances in technology and is briefly described. /Author/
