RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF HYDROCARBON BINDERS: SYNTHETIC STUDY OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS FOR THE COEFFICIENTS OF SHEARING VISCOSITY

The range of absolute viscosities covered by hydrocarbon binders, in the different phases of their utilization in road technique, is extremely vast. The few examples taken up in table I give the orders of magnitude for bitumens fluxed with petroleum oil (cutback), tars for impregnation, penetration, surface dressing, coating and bitumens going from the penetration grade 280/350 to the penetration grade 40/50. According to the order of magnitude of the viscosities to be measured, it is possible to determine them by means of different types of relatively numerous viscometers. It is to the study of these diverse possibilities that the present document is devoted. After a theoretical review of the measuring principles, each of the viscometers considered is studied in function of its principal characterizations of utilization. The different models of viscometers have been classified into several chapters according to their functioning principles. This classification is the subject of table II. Table III gives the list of the viscometers for which the characteristics of utilization are indicated in the body of the present document and this, by type of instruments. Table IV gives the lphabetical list of the viscometers examined. Table V gives, for the main ones of these same viscometers, the ranges of measurable viscosities as well as the ranges of temperatures of possible utilization. The present document has no other purpose than that of presenting a synthesis of the instrumental possibilities of measuring the absolute viscosity of hydrocarbon binders, keeping in mind the principal types of viscometers found in practical application.
