FUSION WELDING TECHNIQUES FOR PLASTICS

The need to produce larger, more complex and reinforced parts from polymers has created an increased need for joining. To date, most semistructural parts have been made from thermoset polymers. Mechanical fasteners and adhesives have been used for joining these materials. However, greater impact resistance, processing ease and potential for recycling are increasing the interest in thermoplastic parts. While adhesives and mechanical fasteners are used for joining thermoplastic parts, these polymers offer an alternative joining possibility, fusion bonding, that is still in its infancy. Various techniques for fusion bonding are outlined in this paper.
