VARIABLE MOMENT MAGNETS FOR SIGNATURE TRIMMING

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of Variable Moment Magnets (VMMs) for signature trimming and illustrate how they can significantly improve the magnetic signature of a ship. The idea is aimed at existing and new built vessels where there is a need for a very low signature. The principle is illustrated by taking a typical steel ship, showing how its undegaussed signature is improved with conventional MFQA coils, then how that signature is further improved in all axes by an average factor of 8 with a simple system of on-board mounted VMMS. Attention is drawn to the fundamental advantages that VMMS have over local degaussing coils for this type of application. Some of the practical engineering aspects are discussed.
