SOME TECHNIQUES FOR MEASURING VEHICLE OPERATING COST AND ROAD DETERIORATION PARAMETERS - WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Field investigations into the behaviour and operating characteristics of traffic and the behaviour and deterioration patterns of the road that carries that traffic require the use of instruments to enable measurements to be made and recorded for analysis. This report describes some techniques available today for measuring vehicle operating cost and road deterioration parameters, with suggestions for simplifying the measurement technique in the light of the technological resources, manpower and facilities available, especially in the context of research studies carried out in developing countries. An instrumented vehicle for the rapid measurement of the permanent features of the road in terms of horizontal and vertical curvature and road width is described, and methods of measuring the variable features resulting from traffic and the changing pavement condition are discussed.
