STRENGTH FORMULAS FOR DESIGN OF STEEL PLATE GIRDERS
Design formulas are presented for evaluating the ultimate strength of plate girder panels under bending, shear, or a combination of shear and bending. The formulas were evolved from a study of the numerical data obtained using the analytical methods previously developed in the course of this research. The ultimate strength of a panel is obtained as a sum of the contributions by the web buckling strength (beam action), the web post-buckling strength (tension field action), and the flange strength (frame action). A tentative recommendation is made for precluding the development of fatigue cracks due to the back-and-forth deflection of the web plate.
