DECK ENGINEER MANUAL
The manual is divided into seven sections covering valves, pumps, packing, general lubrication, evaporators and electro-hydraulic steering gear. The valves described in the first section differ from pump or compressor valves in that they must be opened, closed, or regulated manually. It is a general discussion of their construction, operation, and maintenance. The second chapter discusses three types of pumps - reciprocating, centrifugal and rotary. Chapter three discusses types of packing and procedures used in sealing fixed and moving joints. Chapter four is a general discussion of lubricating oils and greases, their classification and proper use. Chapter five provides a brief description of high and low pressure evaporators and their operation. Included are very clear and detailed diagrams of a two stage flash evaporator showing a complete piping layout in a typical system. Chapter six describes the operation of electrohydraulic steering gear using diagrams of single and double ram units in conjunction with the explanation. The final section consists of 137 multiple choice questions and answers for deck engineer, 53 questions and answers on pumps and their operation and 17 questions and answers on safety and Coast Guard regulations.
