REPORT ON SEA TRIALS OF THE SOVIET ICEBREAKER MUDYUG

After a docking time of less than three months the Soviet icebreaker MUDYUG left the shipyard in Emden, FRG, equipped with a Thyssen-Waas Bow and a Jastram-HSVA Nozzle-System in October 1986. In April 1987 the ship started an expedition near Spitsbergen to test the icebreaking performance. The superiority of this new technical concept was demonstrated. The converted ship was able to break ice-thickness double that of a conventional shape of bow. The manoeuvrability in level ice was excellent. A special ballast-system, integrated into the nozzle system, increased the ability to overcome deep and long ridges. By operating the air/water nozzle system, the speed of the ship in snow-covered ice increased by 15-25%.
