ASPHALT CONCRETE HAB 16 WITH A HIGH CONTENT OF THE GRAIN FRACTION 8-16 MM AND OF FILLER

ASTALTBETONG HAB 16 MED HOEG HALT AV KORNFRAKTION 8-16 MM OCH AV FILLER

In order to prepare an assortment of specimens of asphalt concrete Hab 16 (maximum particle size 16mm) for the testing of wear resistance to studded tyres in a traffic simulator, a mix design study was conducted. This was made on Marshall specimens of systematically varied compositions and on slabs prepared by rolling mixtures obtained from the tested Marshall specimens. Series of slabs were then prepared for the traffic simulator test. The aggregate in the samples contained at least 9% filler and consisted of crushed material. A number of data were procured for the samples. It was concluded that on mix design of asphalt concrete hab 16 according to Swedish specifications one can find a binder content that is essentially lower than the guide value; that stability tests according to Marshall provided no information on suitable binder content for these very dense mixtures; that hab 16 may have satisfactory stability even at very low voids content; that the quality of filler can have great influence on the suitable binder content; that in comparison with granite filler, limestone filler having the same sieve analysis produced a more slippery pavement surface. /Author/TRRL/
