RUMBLE STRIPS - GEOMETRIC DESIGN AND BEHAVIOURAL EFFECTS

RUMBLE STRIPS GEOMETRISK UTFORMNING OCH BETEENDEEFFEKTER

The noise produced by rumble strips will probably cause an increase in level of activation of drivers. If rumble strips were used only in a limited type of traffic situation they would probably also serve as auditory "road signs", i.e. They would inform the driver of the kind of traffic situations approaching. Some of the constructions described aim at giving the driver an illusion of an increasing speed when passing the construction at a fixed speed. This may have the effect of the driver lowering his speed more than he would normally do. The ordinary measure of the effect of rumble strips has been changes in accident rates. However in several of the reported investigations this effect could mostly be assigned to a statistical artifact. Several of the reported investigations state the fact that rumble strips have had an effect on the speed of the road users passing the place of installation. Rumble strips have among other things been installed on the approaches to cross-roads controlled by stop signs. At these cross-roads it has been possible to show a decrease in the number of road users ignoring the stop signs. /TRRL/
