THE IMPACT STRENGTH OF CONCRETE USED IN PILES

The main purpose of this research study is to develop reliable methods and equipment for the testing of strength properties of concrete subjected to impact loading similar to that which occurs with pile driving. Four different concrete qualities are tested according to this method and the results are compared with experiences gained with actual pile driving. A literature survey has also been made and analysed. It will be published as a separate report and is therefore not included. A programme for further development is also indicated resulting in a method fully applicable for a concrete element works. The mechanical equipment discussed was a 16 metre tall modified version of Hopkinson's split bar, and strain gauges, Wheatstone bridges with amplifiers, transient recorders, oscilloscopes and recorders also associated with the testing equipment. An increased aggregate content improves the impact strength of concrete if compressive strength is maintained at a constant level. /TRRL/
