KAE INTEGRATED ECHOSOUNDER, NAVIGATION, AND DATA DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM FOR THE RESEARCH VESSEL METEOR

Krupp Atlas Elektronik have developed an integrated echosounder, navigation, and data distribution system for installation in the research vessel Meteor, which is currently under construction. Incorporated are two novel research echosounder systems: the Atlas Hydrosweep, which covers a strip of the ocean bed of width equal to twice the depth of water, and the Atlas Parasound, which is a sediment sounder permanently installed in the hull that is capable of penetrating as deeply into the seabed as more complex towed arrays. In addition there are normal navigational and survey echosounders and a broad-beam fishing and search sonar. On the navigational side the installation includes the Atlas NACOS 30 navigation system, with X and S band radars, a sonar Doppler log and automatic pilot. The information from all the positional and navigational sensors is integrated to provide an optimal calculated position. In addition there is an Atlas HYROMAP hydrographic post-processing system which displays results on a high-resolution graphic colour screen before they are printed out on an accurate drum plotter, and the Atlas DVS 1300 data distribution system which collects all digital results from throughout the ship, stores them on a magnetic tape, and distributes them to 30 data users on board the vessel. A total of five process computers are included together with almost 100 microprocessors.
