TOWARDS SAFER CRANE OPERATION

The author discusses crane safety with particular reference to mobile cranes. The first aspect is preparing for the lift, checking the weight of the proposed load., its c of g, wind area, etc., against a copy of the load chart for the crane it is intended to use. The differences in safe working loads for jib lengths other than those specified in the chart if interpolation or stepping is used to determine the load are illustrated. Safety instrumentation is described, as are controls for extending and lowering the outriggers. Once the crane has been set up it is advisable to go through the motions of a lift before attaching the load to the crane in all but the simplest of cases; this enables many of the systems to be observed or set to ensure the safe operation of the crane when lifting. Finally some remarks are made regarding circumstances under which safe load indicators will not ensure crane safety.
