A detailed and wide ranging account is given of the development, design and operation of the Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE). Bwes in use in Europe, USA and Asia are described. Particular attention is given to determination of cutting resistance and digging power with various materials, and experience when BWEs are used for excavating hard of difficult material is described. The variation of ground bearing pressure under giant crawlers and the design of ball race slewing rings under slewable superstructures are discussed in detail/ the use of conveyor belts on BWEs is also dealt with. In addition to its application to mining, the use of the BWE for earthmoving for road construction, earth fill dam construction, canal construction and land reclamation are also discussed. The efficiency, maintenance and wage costs of the BWE are considered. /TRRL/
