DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENERGY SAVING APPENDAGE FOR FULL SHIPS

While the propulsive performance of full-form ships deteriorates with the increase of aft fullness, modifications of hull form for improvement are not always possible taking into account the engine room space and propeller/hull clearance. For these reasons, appendages fitted to the stern are of interest to shipbuilders. This paper describes the stern fin (Sumitomo Arched Fin) recently developed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The results of model tests and full-scale measurements have confirmed the following advantages: 1. Reduction of ship resistance. 2. Improvement of propulsive efficiency. 3. Reduction of propeller exciting forces.
