DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR IMPROVING SIDE IMPACT PERFORMANCE OF PASSENGER CARS
A systematic and cost-effective design methodology for improving side impact performance of passenger cars is proposed. Computer analysis methods and test procedures for use within the overall methodology are described. These test procedures include the MIRA Side Impact Dynamic Emulation (S.I.D.E.) procedure for dynamic side impact testing of complete bodyshells. A research project to improve side impact performance by structural optimisation is used to illustrate and develop the methodology. Significant reductions in injury levels are achieved.
