GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE ON EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES. PROCEEDINGS

The proceedings of a conference held at Helena, Montana, April, 1974 and attended by over 200 persons interested in emergency medical services in Montana are summarized. The publication includes highlights of the keynote speeches, 57 recommendations resulting from small group discussions, a synopsis of the participants' evaluation of the conference, and a roster of the participants. Recommendations included the following: expansion of first aid training to elementary and secondary school teachers and to students, starting first grade level; introduction of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training at the eighth grade level; better telephone and radio communication for access to emergency services; coordination of all forms of transportation; regionalization of hospital emergency departments; establishment of a board of certification for emergency medical technicians to provide liability protection; allocation of a percentage of tax revenue from life and health insurance premiums for emergency medical service use; reestablishment of a broad - based emergency medical service advisory council; and launching of a comprehensive public information program to increase awareness of emergency medical services. Small group discussions centered on the following topics: training and education, communications, transportation, hospital emergency departments, legal status concerning emergency medical technicians, funding, interagency coordination, and public information and education.
