A PIONEERING ICEBREAKER/TUG FOR ARCTIC DEVELOPMENT (CANMAR KIGORIAK)

Canmar Kigoriak, bullt by Saint John Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. Ltd., is an icebreaker/anchor-handling tug designed to operate in the Beaufort Sea and Western Arctic Ocean, primarily for providing support service to drill ships. The latest icebreaking technology was utilised in the ship's design. The hull form is new for a vessel of this type: a barge-type hull with a single chine, and a spoon-shaped bow. To ensure good manoeuvrability an extruder, or reamer, is fitted at the joint of the bow and midbody. Longtudinal framing is employed in the midbody with transverse framing at the ends. Shell plating is high tensile steel below the main deck level. The spoon-shaped bow will enable the ship to break thick ice with a miinimum expenditure of energy. Further assistance with icebreaking is provided by a water lubrication system reducing ice friction. Propulsion power is supplied by twin Sulzer 12ZV40/48 medium speed Diesels, each developing 8700 bhp at 530 rpm and coupled through a Renk gearbox to a four-bladed Lips controllable-pitch propeller which works in a nozzle. Two Lips lateral thrusters are installed, one forward and one aft. Main particulars of Canmar Kigoriak are:-- Length, o.a. 91.06m, b.p. 79.34m; Breadth, moulded 17.25m; Depth, mld. 10.00m; Load draught 8.53m; Deadweight 2000 tonnes; Bollard pull 200 tonnes; Speed, maximum 18.6 knots; Complement 22 + 12 passengers; Classification Lloyd's Register, + 100 A1 Icebreaker, Anchor Handling Tug, Arctic Class 3. Canmar Kigoriak is the first vessel to be built to the requirements of the Canadian Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Regulations, Class 3.
