ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE. GUIDELINES FOR THE DESIGN OF INTERCHANGES, TERMINALS AND STOPS

These guidelines were formulated by the Cranfield Centre for Logistics and Transportation on behalf of the Mobility Unit of the Department of Transport (DOT) and the Passenger Transport Executive Group. They aim to provide a guide to good practice in the design of public transport infrastructure, based on: (1) the results of empirical research; (2) existing guidelines from other parts of the world; and (3) the authors' experience of what does and does not meet the needs of people with disabilities. The following aspects are covered: (1) siting and general design principles for bus and rail stations; (2) access to and within buildings; (3) station accommodation and furniture; (4) bus services; (5) shelters; (6) public transport information; (7) signs; (8) personal security; (9) vandalism and graffiti; (10) consultation and training; and (11) details of organisations that might be consulted.
