TESTING BITUMINOUS MATERIALS

THE PAPER DETAILS BRIEFLY THE ACCEPTED METHODS OF ANALYSING BITUMINOUS MATERIALS, AND GOES ON TO DESCRIBE AN EXERCISE CARRIED OUT IN LANCASHIRE WITH THE OBJECT OF DETERMINING WHICH OF THE NORMALLY USED METHODS WAS THE MOST SIMPLE TO OPERATE AND GAVE THE MOST CONSISTENTLY CORRECT ANSWERS. A NON-STANDARD "RAPID" METHOD OF TEST WAS ALSO USED BY THE LANCASHIRE COUNTY LABORATORY IN WHICH THE BINDER CONTENT WAS DETERMINED BY DIFFERENCE INSTEAD OF BY ALIQUOT PROPERTIES. EVIDENCE IS PUT FORWARD TO SUGGEST THAT THIS METHOD IS IN MANY INSTANCES MORE RAPID THAT ANY OF THE OTHER METHODS, AND THAT SINCE THE RESULTS ARE NOT AFFECTED BY EVAPORATION LOSSES, IT IS IN GENERAL MORE ACCURATE THAN THE EXISTING SPECIFIED "RAPID" METHODS OF TEST . THIS ALTERNATIVE METHOD HAS SINCE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE DRAFT BS 598 PRESENTLY AWAITING PUBLICATION, AND INCREASED USE OF THE METHOD MAY SHORTLY BE ANTICIPATED. IN THE WORK CARRIED OUT BY THE LANCASHIRE COUNTY LABORATORY THE FILTER PAPER USED IN THE PRESSURE FILTER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WHATMAN NO. 1 AND NOT A NO. 5 AS SPECIFIED IN THE DRAFT BS. /AUTHOR/
