ON A STERN FLOW FIELD WITH BILGE VORTICES

Previous investigations into velocity distributions around ships' sterns have found the equi-velocity contours and longitudinal velocity components to be of complex form. This has been attributed to three-dimensional separation and the roll-up of the vortex layer near the stern. This paper reports on an experimental investigation into the velocity distribution in the stern region, and a theoretical method for predicting the velocity distribution is proposed based on the results of this experimental work.
