The third edition of the General Dictionary of Railway Terms with a preface by W. Pycha, includes 12,000 terms of expressions that are not only in the railway context but also concern general techniques. This edition, like the earlier ones, has been prepared by the UIC Documentation Bureau with the help of representatives from BR, CFF, DB, DR, FS, NS, ENFE, SNCB, SNCF. The volume has two parts: the first is in tabular form giving the terms in the 6 languages of the Dictionary followed by an alphabetical list of the abbreviations or initials of international bodies and documents connected with railways, the names of which are mentioned in the tables. The second part is made up of alphabetical lists of each of the five languages other than French. The dictionary has been printed for the first time by electronic data processing, using optical ready and photocomposition techniques; it is a useful aid to all those who have to read or write texts dealing with railway technology in an unfamilar language. Not only does this dictionary facilitate the mutual exchange of information on new technical developments, but it also helps to promote better understanding between technicians responsible for solving international transport problems.
