FISHING VESSEL STABILITY AND SAFETY -- A CAUTIONARY NOTE WHEN CONSIDERING POSSIBLE CHANGES IN IMO STANDARDS

The adequacy of the IMO recommendation A168 for minimum intact stability criteria of fishing vessels has been widely debated since its introduction in 1968. The fact that losses still occur raises questions on the level of this stability standard and whether it is maintained in practice. This paper discusses the stability and seaworthiness of fishing vessels in the light of recent experience with UK vessels, and makes suggestions for improvements in safety of these vessels.
