ROLLING BEARINGS IN SHIPS' GEARING

After an introduction in which the general characteristics of rolling bearings are discussed, the Authors, of the SKF company <Schweinfurt, W. Germany), describe the different types of ball and roller bearings suitable for gearing in ships' machinery installations and discuss the lubrication of such bearings, the calculation of their service life <a computer program is available for this>, their behaviour under shock loading, and the "repair friendliness" of gearing incorporating these bearings. A number of ship applications of various types of SKF rolling bearings, in reduction and other transmission gearing manufactured by various firms, are described and illustrated in diagrams. They include reduction gearboxes <including those for use with gas turbines), reverse/reduction gearboxes, and gearing for rudder-propellers and bow thrusters. The advantages of rolling bearings in these applications are summarised.
