THE USE OF SHAFT FOUNDATIONS

The paper describes the successful application of shaft sinking techniques developed by the mining industry to the construction of foundations for major structures. The use of shaft foundations is well suited to the variable and complex geological conditions in the environs of Johannesburg, as well as to areas where dolomite occurs. Four case histories are described. (A) /TRRL/
