WIND-TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS FOR IMPROVING FUNNEL AND SUPERSTRUCTURE DESIGNS

To enable investigations of differently designed funnels and superstructures to be performed while the ship is still in the design stage, an experimental wind tunnel technique has been developed and used at the Swedish Maritime Research Centre SSPA. Using this technique it is possible to examine the dispersal of the smoke plume from the funnel as well as visualizing the flow pattern around the superstructure. In this paper, the developed experimental technique is outlined and some typical results applicable to container ships are presented and discussed.
